Seven Reasons to use the Telephone instead of Email
When you need to convey or discern emotion.
When you need to cut through the communication forest. Rememberthat meeting that had already taken up sixty-seven emails? In three phone calls, it's all set. (Date, time, location, roster of participants, who's having what for lunch.)
When you need to move fast. (Yes, it's true—even with cell phones, ou can have trouble finding someone, or you can get stuck in voicemail. Still, the phone is faster and more reliable than anything else. When you've actually found someone, you know it.)
When you want a remote communication to be private. (Unless you're being recorded or speaking really loudly—and rudely!—in a public place.)
When you need to reach someone who doesn't check their email.
When you want people to be able immediately to engage and respond. The fact that we can talk at the same time and interrupt each other means that we can communicate the way we do in person. The phone allows our words and ideas to overlap, mingle, and amplify one another. Instant messaging and texting mimic this—but it's not the same.
When you need to send a harsh email, you can soften the blow (or distance yourself from it) by calling first with advance warning. ("I just wanted you to know that I'm going to be sending you a formal email letting you know that your bid wasn't successful. I value our relationship and hope that we can speak tomorrow, after you've read it.")

I just hung up from a free conference Skype conversation with Melinda Miller a Principal in the Show Me State. Also joining us was Janeta Garton from the same district, her role is to provide instructional tech support to the principals and teachers in their district. It was exciting for me to listen to their enthusiasm as they were involved in a professional development opportunity at 10:30 pm from their own home.

I am now their newest fan on delicious, Miller & Garton.

Thanks for the call, I enjoyed our conversation and look forward to learning more about the cool things you are both doing for the kids of Willard.

Free TV on the internet...hmmm...I'm giving it a test run for the company.

Joost pronounced juiced is a brand new start-up.

So far with my high speed connection only a few glitches with buffering...I like the interface and it's pretty hip and easy to use.

I'm surprised that we principals and school administrators don't do more to connect and share online...but then again I'm not surprised. When we were teachers we worked with many who chose to close the door and do their magic...but the really good ones shared and contributed to the conversation. So let's synergize!

I evangelized the blessings of del.icio.us today and I now have 2 new principals in my network...welcome Arturo Gonzalez and Miles Erdly.

The one I like best, ShowYourself was featured in my post yesterday. After I added one of Dustin's cool widgets to this site, Principal Mr. P asked me, "How'd you do that?" He says the problem with teachers is, "What's a kid going to learn
from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"
He reminds the other dinner guests that it's true what they say about
teachers:
Those who can, do; those who can't, teach.

I decide to bite my tongue instead of his
and resist the temptation to remind the other dinner guests
that it's also true what they say about lawyers.

Because we're eating, after all, and this is polite company.

"I mean, you're a teacher, Taylor," he says.
"Be honest. What do you make?"

And I wish he hadn't done that
(asked me to be honest)
because, you see, I have a policy
about honesty and a**-kicking:
if you ask for it, I have to let you have it.

You want to know what I make?

I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.
I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional medal of honor
and an A- feel like a slap in the face.
How dare you waste my time with anything less than your very best.

I make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall
in absolute silence. No, you may not work in groups.
No, you may not ask a question.
Why won't I let you get a drink of water?
Because you're not thirsty, you're bored, that's why.

I make parents tremble in fear when I call home:
I hope I haven't called at a bad time,
I just wanted to talk to you about something Billy said today.
Billy said, "Leave the kid alone. I still cry sometimes, don't you?"
And it was the noblest act of courage I have ever seen.

I make parents see their children for who they are
and what they can be.

You want to know what I make?

I make kids wonder,
I make them question.
I make them criticize.
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them write, write, write.
And then I make them read.
I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely beautiful, definitely
beautiful
over and over and over again until they will never misspell
either one of those words again.
I make them show all their work in math.
And hide it on their final drafts in English.
I make them understand that if you got this (brains)
then you follow this (heart) and if someone ever tries to judge you
by what you make, you give them this (the finger).

Let me break it down for you, so you know what I say is true:

We spent the day putting the final touches on the Geocaching booth. I checked out the vendor hall and had a couple of great conversations with the Discovery Learning folks. The Spokane school district is the featured school district during the conference. I went through their exhibits this evening and talked to the organizers to determine if this could be something that my district does next year in Seattle. I think we could do it! We ended the day with dinner at Cyrus O'leary's. It was a long, fun, and productive day.

Geocaching Event Set

Here I am in Spokane...NCCE 007 should be fantastic.

A group of local geocachers gathered this evening to prepare for the geocaching event. We met at the Northern Lights Brewery from 6 - 8:30 for dinner and planning. What a great group of local volunteers! 8 folks showed up to help make the geocaching event a success. We loaded up the 69 GPS units (37 Garmin eTrex & 32 Magellan eXplorist 210s) with batteries and new waypoints. In addition, I gave an overview of the rules of the game for the conference.

I am continually impressed & amazed with the generosity of geocachers! Some are even taking time off work to help out! We handed out a few prizes tonight but the grand prize a Magellan GPS Crossover will go to the winner of our game on Friday

The planning of this event took place entirely on our wiki on Wikispaces. Many of us had not met before this evening but yet most of our work had been completed online. We also used Skype to communicate.

David is a master evangelist converting many with each sermon. Today was no different with 100's converting to this new way in Seattle (Bellevue). I didn't hear anyone speak in tongues as he had reported from an earlier Web 2.0 revival. It's still amazing to me how many educators have still not heard "the good word" of the Web 2.0. There are many still to be saved and David's work has just begun. I will continue to be a disciple advancing the good news!

Coolest Conference Ever!

I have been throughly enjoying this free online conference!

I was able to participate in a workshop on wikis by Vicki Davis.

It provided fantastic lessons and practice in online colaboration. I worked with an educator from Cairo, Egypt and Pennsylvania to produce an award winning wiki!

Vicki wrapped up the workshop with a Skypecast complete with awards presentation!

As aresult of this conference, I'll even be hosting a Skypecast myself.

When will the rest of our principals and teachers catch on to this exciting way to work?

I took June off.

I found I had emptied my small brain and my posts were simply echoes of others work.

I will however be using this blog to record my experiences here at NECC in San Diego. My wife and I arrived today and we took a long walk from Harbor Island to the Gas Lamp District. We had dinner at the Rock Bottom with a large group of 70 or so Geocachers. We have been planning an event here at NECC that will give attendees an opportunity to learn how to Geocache.

I want to thank Sonny and Sandy Portacio for their work on this project!

We have a model where teachers on special assignment provide support to classroom teachers, this year we call them Building Learning Specialist and next year their roles will change to provide more content support and their title will reflect a coaching model.

I'm excited about how they are beginning to organize and use a wiki to share information between themselves. Check it out it's on The PB Wiki.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia said Tuesday that it plans to start an online social network similar to MySpace.com, but aimed at adult women.

JibJib Media's attempt at a MySpace knockoff is JokeBox and C/Net lists Sisterwoman as another similar MySpace knockoff designed for women over 21.

I just don't think they'll catch on like Myspace did.

Uploading: Flattener #4

I'll be talking with a group of educators and instructional tech leaders tomorrow at the eLearning showcase at the new Puget Sound Educational Support District center in Renton, WA.

To kick off the day of exploration; Conn and Anne asked me to "keynote" for 30 - 45 minutes on the hot topic of Web 2.0.

I've decided to focus our discussion...and I hope it will be a discussion...on Uploading as defined in the recently released "updated and expanded" version of Thomas Friedman's The World is Flat.

I was the first to buy his updated version the day it arrived at our local Borders. I had read the first version and wondered how Mr. Friedman would handle the new flattener of Uploading. It turns out that his original Outsourcing section is expanded to include Uploading.

Friedman reveals that he reads blogs daily to get his information and he used Wikipedia as a source for his book. Both his daily blog fix and this Wikipedia trust can be be found in both editions.

He credits his inspiration for this Uploading notion to Wired Magazine's article, "We Are The Web." He titles the section "Harnessing the Power of Communities" and he divides the piece into 4 sections:

Community Developed Software
Community Developed Answers
Blogging: Uploading News & Commentary (w/ mention of Podcasting)
Wikipedia: Community Uploaded Content

Finally he states that Uploading has the potential to be the most disruptive Flattener even though the number of Uploaders is still relatively small.

I have 25 examples of Uploading to discuss; all have been Uploaded in a ThumbStack presentation which I'll use to guide the discussion.

I'd be curious to hear what you think...seriously.

You may have seen my son's blog, where he documented his experience while he was in Katrina stricken Waveland, Mississippi.

His blog was created entirely from his cell phone using go@blogger.

Recently my wife did the same thing on her trip to Hawaii.

Steve's sneak peak says Tom included a new flattener..."Uploading"...sounds like he stayed with 10 flatteners, I wonder what flattener "Uploading" replaced?

Off topic:

I spent the last 2 days touring Central Washington University with my son Craig. He plans to attend here next year as a Junior.

"For the third consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report has ranked CWU among the top 20 such institutions in its annual ranking. Central was tied for 15th on the list in the 2006 online edition of America's Best Colleges."

On the tour we learned CWU's Construction Management degree is one of their more rigorous requiring 135 credits. This department also totes a 100% employment rate after graduation.

We also learned that the tallest buildings in Kittitas County are located on the CWU campus...and they're not very big.

Personally, I received my Masters from this fine University...Go Wildcats!

I've been listening to a weekly podcast on geocaching called PodCacher.Com. It's produced by the PodCachers Sonny & Sandy. This husband and wife team puts together a great show each week.

It may give you ideas on how podcasting might be used in your school.

It may also give you ideas on how to use geocaching with your students.

Speaking of geocaching, the City of Puyallup is hosting a geoteaming event this Saturday, April Fools day and that's no joke!

I wonder if Sonny & Sandy will mention that on their show?

Open Office Writer is a free replacement for Microsoft Word.

Writely is a cool Wiki type online word processor bought by Google.

Writeboard from 37 signals is another cool wiki collaboration word processor.

But AjaxWrite is the coolest yet.

This is all new stuff... Word processing has come a long way!

Protect the Children!

The easiest way to protect children from the internet is to deny them access.

Let's cut off all collaboration sites that promote discussion!

Wikis create loopholes where inappropriate content may be published and viewed.

Blogs allow you to post your thoughts and even pornographic images if you want.

Discussion boards, like blogs can not be controlled.

Chat rooms are no better and students could engage in an inappropriate discussion with someone from India.

Photo sharing sites like flickr allow you to post images that should not be viewed in schools.

What are your thoughts to this line of thinking?

Weblogs Wikis and Podcasts - Oh, My!

Oh My is right.

I want to take this opportunity to point you to 3 wiki's that I've been using lately 2 of which I've used to work on a couple of regional and national projects.

The first is Writely.com, in fact Writely is so good it was recently purchased by Google. I used Writely to put together the geocaching documents we used for this year's NCCE conference.  It's simple and free!

The second Wiki is Wikispaces. Wikispaces is another free wiki hosting website.  Sonny Portacio, a tech director and podcaster from San Diego, and I have been working on coordinating a geocaching event for the NECC conference coming this July.  This wiki has allowed us to edit and publish multiple documents together online.  You should also take a look at his weekly podcast on geocaching at Podcacher.com

Finally the best wiki I've seen this week was started by Darren Kuropatwa using the peanut butter wiki.  He calls it Whiplash.  It's an amazing way to look at Web 2.0 technologies using wiki's for staff development. In fact, it's given me some great Ideas for a Keynote I'm going to be presenting at PSESD in May.

This post may seem odd coming the day after a recruiting post...

My good friend Rebecca had her laptop stolen from her car today. We were at a Best Western conducting interviews for Assistant Principal. The laptop was in her bag in her back seat of her van with tinted windows. The thief came between 11 - 12 in broad daylight, tried to pry open her door at the lock and after a failed attempt busted out her driver's side window and took off with her laptop and bag with all the contents. The contents?...all of her teacher evaluations!

What a shame
